An arresting voice and three superb instrumentalists. The Albanian-Swiss singer Elina Duni and the Swiss first­rate jazzers Colin Vallon, Patrice Moret and Norbert Pfammatter make for a unique interaction between four musicians. The passion and melancholy of Balkan folk fuses with virtuoso modern jazz. Elina Duni researched traditional songs of love and sorrow from her Balkan origins and gave them a new spin with her musical allies. They combine the melodic timbre of the old songs with the rich jazzy sounds of the instruments. They embark on ethereal improvisations, only to return to earth with groovy rhythms and melodies. Contemporary Balkan jazz stripped of all folklore kitsch. (ron)
