Zürcher Theater Spektakel

Hardly any other theatre company has been invited to the Theater Spektakel more often than the Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio run by the Italian artist and director Romeo Castellucci. And hardly any other company has caused a greater stir. Focussing on icons of human history and with eccentric genius, Castellucci creates breathtaking theatrical images and reveals the basic conditions of human existence with merciless acuity. In his latest work – with the awkward title «On the Concept of the Face, Regarding the Son of God» – he takes on Jesus, the icon of western culture per se, the epitome of suffering as well as compassion and love. His short play is condensed to its essentials: In front of a huge image of Jesus and in an absolute pristine white interior, an adult son takes care of his senile, decrepit, incontinent father. Never has Castellucci been more radical or more tender. (esc)
