Can war be successfully presented on a stage? The Antwerp-based Iraqi director and actor Mokhallad Rasem has attempted to do so: In an explosive mix of kitsch and the grotesque, over-the-top TV shows and surreal mask theatre he revives his childhood in Baghdad, overshadowed by wars and the despotic regime of Saddam Hussein. A no-holds-barred performance on growing up in the total absence of any form of dependability. (esc)
